Last week we took Zach in to have an Endoscopy done. After meeting with the surgeon who would be placing the G-tube I insisted on more follow-up with a GI doctor first to see if it would be possible to treat his vomiting surgically. If we were able to diagnose Zach has having reflux, then we could add an additional surgery to his g-tube placement that would prevent reflux and hopefully help with his vomiting and texture aversion. We went in last Tuesday for this Endoscopy to find he doesn't have any erosion in his esophagus or his stomach (pretty impressive for someone who's vomited practically every day for almost two years). This means it's not likely he has reflux which is a relief, but we still don't know why he's vomiting and why he won't eat solid foods. The GI doctor also wanted to start him on a medication that works as an appetite stimulant and is also known to decrease vomiting.
We started his medication today and this evening he brought his dad a large jar of baby food and proceeded to eat the entire thing. Not sure if these things are related, but so far things are looking up. We're also scheduled for his g-tube placement on Wednesday, January 18th. He'll spend at least one night in the hospital and as long as his electrolytes are stable he will be able to go home. At this point we are ready to have an easy way to administer his medications and not have to force him to drink his high calorie milk anymore. We'll be able to feed him milk through the night and then have more time to focus on eating solids during the day. Hopefully this will help him to start eating better, decrease vomiting, and gain weight. We'll keep you updated after his surgery next week.
Good luck Zach! Be strong!
