Keeps on going

So last Friday after my last post they finally moved me to an antepartum room. This room was heavenly. I was not hooked up to continuous monitoring all the time, and the nurses through the night only bothered me twice to give me medication, check his heart rate, and check my vitals. This all went well for a couple days, even though on Saturday they put me on bedrest with bathroom privileges (all I did was lay in bed anyway). On Monday morning, however, I woke up with pain on my right side about the level of my kidney. They did a u/a and found a lot of bacteria so I had a kidney infection. They started me on antibiotics and I took some tylenol for the pain. The pain moved across my back and to my right side over the next day or so, but the tylenol kept it tolerable. We then found out the bacteria was resistant to the antibiotic I was on and we had to start a new one. Eventually the pain went away and we were just waiting for the antibiotics to get rid of this infection.

On Tuesday night I went to bed and was feeling a little short of breath. I knew part of the reason was because he was no longer sitting low in my pelvis, he decided to camp out in my ribs for a little bit. I told the docs I thought it was time for another reduction, and on Wednesday morning they said they'd fit me in. I went down for the reduction that afternoon and everything went smoothly. They drained 3.3 liters and my AFI went from 55 down to 41. That's the lowest it's been in like 6 weeks. After the reduction they sent me for my NST and I started having severe cramping, sharp pain across my lower abdomen. They sent me over to L&D instead and thankfully I finally got some wonderful morphine (never had it before but it's now a very good friend of mine :) The pain eased up and they checked me for anything that could be causing this pain. They tested the fluid they drained and didn't find any infection (chorioamnitis) and they watched me closely for a placental abruption, both would mean it was delivery time. They watched his heart rate and my contractions through the night and he didn't show any signs of distress and my contractions slowed down. By morning I felt much better, still had a little pain, and they finally transferred me back over to my antepartum room. Still not sure what the pain is from, but at least we avoided another near delivery.

Now I'm on IV antibiotics for at least 48 hours and then they'll do oral antibiotics for 14 days and then she said I'd be on a prophylactic antibiotic due to my challenged kidneys for the rest of my pregnancy. That's very ambitious, but I'm not sure this pregnancy will last for another 14 days.

Now we just wait and see what happens. At this point we're doing whatever we can to allow him time to grow bigger. If there is a GI tract obstruction that is causing the extra fluid, that would mean he would need surgery very soon after birth, and they want him to be as big as possible. The only issue I see at this point is convincing me to do another reduction after my experience this last time. They're pretty sure another would be needed, but I'm not going to be very willing. We'll just wait and see what else this little guy has in store for us.

  1. Holy cow Becky! When it rains, it pours! You poor thing. I can't believe that you are now having to deal with a kidney infection on top of everything else. You seem to have such a good attitude about everything. You're amazing! I'll keep you in my prayers and pray that this is the last complication that you have to deal with. Best of luck with everything.
